Most people use the two nearest airports, Alicante or San Javier (Murcia) which are about 90 minutes drive. The building of a new airport at Corvera, less than an hour away, has been delayed and is now due to open in the Autumn of 2011.
Some people use other airports, although these involve a longer drive, they can be cheaper at times. Valencia is an easy 2 1/2 hours, Almeria 3 hours and Madrid (flights can be a lot cheaper in summer) 4 hours. Madrid is a beautiful city and maybe you could enjoy a day or two in Madrid before coming to Hilltops?
Major roads here are well surfaced, very quiet compared to the UK and traffic jams virtually unknown so travelling long distances not a problem.
